Art Journal Page with Blackout Poetry

aug 11 z

How many of you have tried blackout poetry for your art journal page?  It’s so fun!  I just did it with tweens and teens at three different workshops and they loovve it.  Alter a book for art? Oh Yeah!

Step 1
I grabbed a page from 365 Days of Joy by my pal Kelly Epperson.  Kelly’s writing is full of humor.  I highlighted words to make a poem/line of inspiration.  I “blacked” out, (actually whited out) with zinc white acrylic paint, also called mixing white. This white allows the words to be seen but blurs them, send them to the background.  If I used titanium white, which is opaque, the words would not be seen.  Then painted with orange. Blackened the edges by rubbing on ink pad.

Step 2
Created the bright yellow background with lemon zest spray and water.  I used a brush to take it to the edges.

Step 3
Stenciled the border with dirty martini and funky fuschia.  This is a great stencil with lots of possibilities.

Step 4
Mixed molding paste with light green acrylic paint and added the dots with Infra stencil. Then washed the stencil immediately. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s worth stating again…wash stencils immediately after molding paste because it will dry hard and take forevah to clean.
